Do you work on network equipment for a living?
Do you know someone who does ?
Want to use something other than a index card or a scrap of paper to keep track of what you have learned
If so, you should use this journal!
Hardly a day goes by where you don’t learn something about one or more of the network devices that you are using or supporting. In the heat of the moment, you probably scribble something down on your smartphone, post it note or index card. You mean to put it with the rest of your tidbits of knowledge but it doesn’t always make it there. This journal helps make that process a little easier.
The beauty of this journal is that there are multiple ways that it can be used. What will work for one person may not work for someone else. You can start with one journal and keep things in chronological order or you can have one journal for each distinct product that you are using.
We have all used a variety of options to keep track of lessons learned, undocumented commands, etc. Even with systems that have only a GUI interface, this type of journal can still be of help. One of the important things to remember is to record the version of firmware on the device in question when the change you are writing in the journal is to record the version of firmware on the device. The reason for this is that occasionally changes to the GUI happen and having a frame of reference is to a difference in the firmware can help save you some troubleshooting when you to go to do the same thing on another system and the same options aren’t present.
